At RJ Custom Joinery, we work with a wide variety of timber species. Each has its own uniqueness and suitability for the job at hand. Factors we consider when working with timber include (but are not limited to) strength, durability, density, appearance and longevity.
Note: When focusing on windows, doors and housing construction there may be specific BAL ratings that need to be addressed. As a result timber selection may be limited.
A list of timbers we commonly use are listed below. We are not restricted to this and are happy to discuss other timber species with you.
NGR New Guinea Rosewood.
New Guinea Rosewood is very stable with little natural movement and a low shrinkage rate. It has very good durability and is naturally termite resistant. It is widely used for external joinery and luxury furniture items. It’s a hardwood species mainly grown in Papua New Guinea. The colour of NGR can vary widely from light to dark shades of brown with very distinguished grain and growth rings. NGR does regularly show us beautiful streaks of pinks and reds and truly is a beautiful timber.
KDHW Kiln Dried Hard Wood.
**No longer available.**
Commonly known as Vic Ash or Tassie Oak, KDHW was locally grown and sourced from Victorian timber mills. KDHW was widely used within the Victorian timber and window industry for it’s sustainability, low shrinkage rates and great aesthetics. It is naturally light in colour with streaks of gum vein and can have borer marks throughout.
Accoya.
Accoya is made from radiata pine trees. These are sourced and taken to production facilities in the Netherlands where they undergo a modification process, more specifically known as Acetylation. This process turns the radiata pine into the worlds most stable timber, Accoya.
The timber’s structure is modified to the core creating an inhospitable environment helping to control unwanted organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. Accoya comes with a 50 year above ground warranty and is great for long lasting windows and doors.

WRC - Western Red Cedar
It is very common to manufacture windows and doors from Western Red Cedar. It is a very lightweight softwood, making it very easy to machine and handle. It has a stable grain structure and can be very pale brown to very dark brown in colour. The naturally occurring oils found within WRC make it resistant to termite damage.
Blackbutt.
Blackbutt is an extremely versatile strong Aussie hardwood with colours ranging from golden yellow to pale brown. It shows beautiful streaks of gum vein and can have borer marks throughout. It is prone to a small amount of twisting and shrinking but we know how to mitigate this.
Blackbutt is our preferred species for our frame sills for all doors and any windows made from KDHW.
